Reptiles, Zip Lines, and Maximo: Why the Alligator Farm Is Worth the Visit
If you’re looking for a truly wild experience during your Vilano Beach getaway, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park is a must. This place has been a local icon since 1893 (yes, really!) and is the only zoo in the world where you can see all 24 species of crocodilians — think gators, crocs, caimans, and even gharials. It’s part thrill, part education, and 100% worth the trip.

One of the stars of the show is Maximo, a 15-foot saltwater croc tipping the scales at over 1,200 pounds. He hangs out in a massive tank with an underwater viewing window — and trust us, seeing him up close is unforgettable (and kind of jaw-dropping).
But the Alligator Farm isn’t just reptiles. You’ll find exotic birds, lemurs, sloths, and even a zip line that soars over the gator enclosures. Want a little extra adrenaline? Try the Crocodile Crossing or the Python Challenge. Plus, daily feeding shows and wildlife presentations keep things fresh for every visit.
Insider tip: Visit during rookery season (March–June) when hundreds of wading birds nest above the gators — it’s chaotic, beautiful, and something you won’t see anywhere else.
Fun fact: While I haven’t made it there yet, Derek had a business meeting onsite (yes, they even have meeting space!) and said it was a seriously cool experience. Safe to say, it’s now on our list to visit with the nieces and nephews.
So if you’re up for something fun, unique, and just minutes away from Saltwater + Sunsets, the Alligator Farm is a great pick. Book your stay with us and get ready to explore one of the wildest attractions in town — no passport required. 🐊🌴
